MULTI-SECTORAL STAKEHOLDER TEAM APPROACH TO SCALE-UP COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH IN KENYA: BUILDING ON LOCALLY-GENERATED EVIDENCE AND LESSONS LEARNED (TEAM)

TEAM aims to effectively integrate mental health services, with minimal expenditure of resources, into pre-existing, community-based, government funded, formal and informal health services in Kenya.

Objectives

Objective 1: To strengthen effective, self-driven leadership and governance to maximize community mental health ownership and sustainability in Makueni County.

Objective 2: To provide comprehensive community mental health awareness to trained staff at the health facilities to promote health seeking behaviour in the population.

Objective 3: To continually document and collect data on all the activities to monitor and evaluate TEAM.

The Approach

The activities of Team are focused on the following four key areas:

  1. Training – of both formal and informal health workers in screening and identification of mental illnesses.
  2. Mental health literacy – providing mental health information to raise awareness.
  3. Stakeholder engagement – involving all relevant stakeholders and existing healthcare structures from the community level to the county government level to support mental health service provision.
  4. Policy – influencing policy in support of mental health service provision.
