Prof. David Ndetei - Founder
Professor David Ndetei received his first degree, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), from the University of Nairobi in 1975. In 1980 he received Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) in the United Kingdom, followed by a PhD degree from the University of Nairobi in 1985. Later, in 2004, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych) and in 2013, Doctor of Science (DSc) from the University of Nairobi.
He is currently Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Nairobi, a position he has held since 1995, and the Founding Director of Africa Mental Health Foundation (AMHF).
His work at AMHF involves conducting innovative implementation research that seeks to inform provision of affordable, appropriate, available and accessible mental health services in primary healthcare with a focus on the following areas: community mental health; incorporating mental health in treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension; mother-child health; early childhood development; school mental health including substance use and suicide.
He has been the PI or Co-I of most Kenyan published clinical and community epidemiological studies on mental health and substance abuse which are the basis for practice in Kenya. He has authored six books, 21 monographs, and over 250 publications in peer reviewed Journals.

Director – Research, Administration and Finance
Dr. Mutiso holds a PhD and Masters in Clinical Psychology from the University of Nairobi. She is in charge of research in addition to overseeing the overall administration of the Foundation. She has been the Principal Investigator for two projects run by the Foundation on innovative integration of mental health services in primary health care through task-shifting to include both formal and informal health care systems.
She has a strong interest in mental health-related research and emerging trends. She also has a strong bias to child psychology, parent-child relationships and developmental issues. She is a co-author in a manual on psycho-trauma, has contributed book chapters and published several articles in peer-reviewed journals. She has been in charge of the various projects that AMHF has undertaken for the past 5 years.
Senior Finance and Administration Officer
Rebecca is a CPA-K finalist and a holder of a Bachelors of Commerce (Double major Finance & Accounting) from Strathmore University. She focuses on ensuring the integrity of accounting information by researching account issues for compliance and by establishing quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
Catherine N. Maghanga
Finance and Administration Officer
Catherine holds a Diploma in Business Information Technology in addition to a Kenya Accounting Technician Certificate course (KASNEB) from Strathmore University Distance Learning Center. Having attended various seminars in relation to team building and customer care, Catherine has a passion for team work and a strong belief that a customer is not only from the outside but also within the office. In her words, “Research is about continuous learning and consultation, an aspect I appreciate most in the environment at Africa Mental Health Foundation”.
Dr. Abednego Musau
Dr. Musau holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery Degree (M.B.Ch.B) from Moi University. He is currently at an advanced stage of obtaining a Master’s degree In Public Health (Epidemiology and Disease Control) under the Moi University – AMREF collaboration. In addition, he is a certified peer educator and counsellor and also a trainer of trainers (TOT) on several health topics. He has a strong research background and joined AMHF to pursue his dream of becoming a career researcher. He is trained in dealing with communities under the Community Based Education and Services (COBES) – part of Moi University’s School Of Medicine innovative approaches to training health workers. He is also a member of the Kenya Medical Association and Christian Medical Association Kenya.
Dr. Eric Nandoya
Erick Nandoya is a social scientist with great interest in social determinants of health. He holds a PhD in Social Science specializing in Management of Health and Social Programmes from St. Elizabeth University in Europe in Collaboration with the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He is responsible for the delivery of AMHF’s research projects by providing coordination support for project implementation. He has strong interest in health related projects and contributed to the development of manuals in management of health programmes including governance and leadership in health facility boards in rural Kenya.
Research Ethics and Publications Officer
Christine holds a Master of Science in Medical Statistics at the University Of Nairobi Institute Of Tropical and Infectious Diseases and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Nairobi. Christine is committed to providing dynamic and compelling solutions to matters relating to ethics in research projects at the Foundation by ensuring data quality control measures and ethical principles are adhered to.
Winnie Chemutai Langat
Human Resources Officer
Winnie holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resources) and is an Associate Member of Institute of Human Resources Management – Kenya. She is currently finalizing her Post Graduate Diploma (Higher Diploma) in Human Resources Management at the College of Human Resources Management –Kenya. She believes in increasing value through people and works to maintain an enthusiastic, motivated and happy workforce through ensuring appropriate policies are implemented and embedded in the day to day activities of the Foundation.

Projects / Business Development Officer
Ruth holds a bachelors degree in Business Information Technology from Strathmore University and is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Project Management from JKUAT. At the Foundation, she is engaged in developing social business models for persons with mental illness. She is passionate about community development focused on economic empowerment through capacity building and social enterprise.
Susan is a continuing student at Mt. Kenya University for her Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies. She holds a Diploma in Social Work and Social Development from The University of Nairobi. Having volunteered and worked in various organizations in relation to community/social development, she has a passion for improving and impacting lives through service. In her own words “Success is impacting your world with the investment of your personality”. She operates on the motto, “Think impact and you will see growth”.
Executive Assistant to the Director
Grace Mutevu has worked with Africa Mental Health Foundation since 2001. Grace is a qualified secretary, having obtained her certificate from St. Johns Training Institute. She is involved in various administrative duties, providing support to the Executive Director’s office and plays a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the office.
Susan Muli has been with Africa Mental Health Foundation since 2001. She deals with client queries.
